Roofman is a stranger-than-fiction true story. The unique real-life premise blends suspense, human complexity, and dark humor.
Starring Channing Tatum & Kirsten Dunst, Roofman portrays the bizarre life of Jeffrey Manchester, a fugitive who lived undetected in a Toys “R” Us while evading capture.
The down-to-earth humility is what makes this film so appealing. It depicts small town America at its faithful, trusting, hopeful best. It’s so nice not to be blasted by car chases and super powers and giddy special effects for a change.
Roofman is predominantly a one-man showcase for the full range of Tatum’s talents, but the entire ensemble is crucial for any good caper. Dunst’s prowess pushes his own performance, while Peter Dinklage offers levity as the stern store manager Mitch.
Plus, it helps when your main actor, Tatum, gives a great performance of a smart man who makes all the wrong decisions for desperate but good reasons. These split tugs of adoration and desperation create one of the best—if not the very best—complete performances of the 45-year-old’s career. In this movie, Tatum proves he’s more than just a chiseled face in (a movie that asks): Can you change who you are without facing the consequences of who you once were?
Even when some parts were adapted to make it more cinematic, I still can’t believe that this movie is based on a true story. It’s a testament to how often life is stranger than fiction.
