Air is full of Air. The movie has a lot of potential, but all of it is watered down into a bland drama that doesn’t excite any of Nike or Jordan fans.
Matt Damon does an okay job as Sonny Vaccaro. He’s the reason Air Jordan exists. He’s even the reason Nike is a thing in 2023. However, his portrayal of Vaccaro leaves a lot to be desired.
I must disagree with the critics. The movie’s main strength is not the performances. It’s Affleck, Damon, and Bateman for fuck’s sake. They better deliver.
In fact, their delivery was okay. It’s what we’ve come to expect, nothing new or shiny. If anything, Viola Davis shines thru the noise as Jordan’s mom. As far as I’m concerned, she even overshined Damon (the main character), and Affleck, who’s playing the CEO of Nike.
The movie’s main strength is the story. Who doesn’t know Michael Jordan? Who hasn’t seen an Air Jordan? Or a Nike shoe or logo? Precisely. The movie succeeds at bringing a usually forgotten part of sports history into the minds of today’s audiences. That’s it.
