Argylle is entertaining. Sadly, that’s where the fun ends. An over-the-top action comedy with an extremely overlong runtime.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ll watch Henry Cavill in anything. But if you think that an extensive list of A-Listers can save a movie? Think again. Argylle is the proof that you can’t make a good movie just by hiring well-known actors. Yes, the movie is a charming and sometimes stunning action comedy with solid central performances and some memorable set pieces, but the pacing and connective tissue don’t work as well as it needs to.
Each actor feels like they did their part on a green screen without even seeing who they’re playing against. Cavill feels like he’s auditioning to be a Ken in Barbie 2.0, and don’t get me started with John Cena’s character. Why is he even there? It could have been played by anyone.
Instead of paying all those actors to show up, director Matthew Vaughn should have focused a bit more on the story, plot, and production. The green screen can do a lot. But it doesn’t help when the viewer can identify each scene shot on green screen, and the extreme video game like VFX.
In summary, it’s an okay popcorn movie to watch where Alfie, the cat, does most of the heavy lifting especially considering that movie feels so airy and silly that it loses its steam halfway. Thirty minutes less runtime could have benefited everyone.
Should You Watch It?
Argylle has the uneasy feel of a movie that seemed great in theory but just doesn’t work in execution. A re-hashing of all the Kingsman movies with non of its flair.
Where Can I Watch It?
