Down Low is a queer romantic drama with a murder. Aka a mess. And that’s a good thing. Lukas Gage is the perfect gay Gen Z.
Starring Zachary Quinto & Gage, the move is an outrageous comedy about one wild night for a deeply repressed man that meets a twink who gives him a happy ending. Unsurprisingly, a lot of lives are ruined as a result, and some are satisfied.
In fact, this movie is extremely refreshing to watch. Yes, it’s dumb. But this unapologetic dark comedy is thankfully a change of routine for queer coming-out experiences. And it’s all thanks to the weird chemistry between the two co-stars.
Whenever a wild exponent like Gage is on screen — which is basically all of this near two-hander’s runtime — you feel like the movie could go pretty much anywhere, and it does. Blowjobs? Happy endings? Fake Grindr? Murder? Comedy? This movie has it all. The typical circuit party routine.
On the other hand, a lot of queer men will identify with Quinto’s character. A 50 years old gay man who’s just realising that he’s gay, and missed on a lot of things.
I laughed, I really really laughed, and I identified with some of the events. Gimme more of these weird queer romantic comedies that are a hot mess!
Should You Watch It?
Crammed with laughs across a delightfully stupid story, this is a fun queer movie with great performances let down by absurdist plotting.
