A Working Man proves that you can’t always recreate the magic when you get the same ingredients. There’s a reason it’s called magic.
What worked with The Beekeeper is definitely not working here. David Ayer should really find a new writer for his next movie and not team up with Sylvester Stallone ever again.
Starring Jason Statham, A Working Man is effectively a rehash of The Beekeeper. A man minding his own business. He gets interrupted to save someone in his life from an eastern European mafia. This movie can be taught in universities in a lazy writing course.
I love action and gore. I love all John Wick movies for that reasons. Plus, I have no problem with seeing Statham dishing out doses of lethality and body count like a working man, but the narrative is too bland to be taken seriously. Or even not seriously. It’s a movie-made-for-tv to be honest, with the writing of a child.
What this movie does well is the fight sequences where Statham dispenses justice. At those moments, it’s exciting, visceral, and thrilling. But they’re far with no logic. What this movie doesn’t do well is… everything else.
Should You Watch It?
If you are searching for an action film with a little more, look elsewhere. This is really The Perfect Statham against the Walking Cliches.
