Caught Stealing is violent, funny, absolutely nuts in places, and thoroughly entertaining. I’d definitely watch it again.
Starring Austin Butler, this film directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Charlie Huston based on his own book, Caught Stealing is a star-studded mayhem from the Robert Rodriguez or Guy Ritchie playbook… Butler kept me rooting for him until the end, however. So did the cat.
From the first minute, you know what’s going on. Everything goes sideways for Butler’s Hank Thompson, and it all goes downhill for him from there. The pace is fast and propulsive and all characters are expendable, so you’re never quite sure where you’re headed next.
This film is an adrenaline-fueled, twisty action flick that doesn’t feel frivolous. It feels grounded, and violence has consequences. There is loss and grief, and there is kindness and love.
Even the side characters here are amazing actors with perfect casting: From Matt Smith to Bad Bunny.
However, if there is a role that requires a bad ass Jewish man, Liev Schreiber is getting first pass, and he is paired with Vincent D’Onofrio and a side of Carol Kane. They are worth the price of admission. Violent, funny, absolutely nuts in places, and thoroughly entertaining.
But let’s be honest. This is a Butler star-vehicle, and man, can he drive the car… Butler has been on a roll with his character choices all the way back to Elvis. Like Aronofsky’s past redemption stories, Hank’s turns into a runaway train: loose, careless and fatal, all the way to the end.
Should You Watch It?
While Butler is caught in the cross hair, all the characters around him make a satisfyingly wacky movie that I enjoyed from beginning to end. I’m definitely watching again.
