Inside Out 2 brings the little voices back, and adds to them. One of the rare sequels that not only matches the original, but may also surpass it.
Similar to its main character, Riley, this franchise is clearly growing up with this sequel. Yes, this new work does not quite plumb the emotional depths of the first movie, but it is just as smart and entertaining.
Putting aside the clear gimmicks to sell toys, this all-around impressive directorial debut from Kelsey Mann more than lives up to the legacy of the original, while giving a much more nuanced and well-developed exploration of its genius concept. It’ll definitely spark a conversation and perhaps even help kids understand what’s happening at this very tumultuous time in their lives.
Regardless of when you hit puberty, or how long ago, you will connect with this sequel’s new characters. Anxiety might not be pleasant, Envy and Ennoui are…even less pleasant, and don’t get me started with Embarrassment. But as the movie will remind all of us, that doesn’t make it any less essential a part of growing up.
Should You Watch It?
Pixar’s Inside Out proves onces again that it’s way more fun than therapy! Anyone who’s experienced puberty, no matter how long ago, will appreciate it. We are reminded that just because we grow up doesn’t mean we’re not still dealing with Embarrassment, Ennui, Envy and especially Anxiety.
