The Fall Guy is an uplifting romp that is overstuffed with wild entertainment. Romance, comedy, explosions and more. Give me a sequel.
Starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and other surprises, the action-comedy film exceeded my expectations, with a side or romance.
Let’s get one thing out of the way: Yes, the film is not perfect. Gosling seemed afraid to lean into the campiness of it all, but his charisma saved every single scene. On addition, director David Leitch could have tidied up some scenes by trimming 15 minutes off the movie. That would have made a perfect film.
Now that we got this out of the way, let’s dive in! Gosling’s chemistry with Blunt was off the charts. The banter between the leads seemed effortless. In fact, the movie worked thanks to its stars and it’s banging soundtrack.
Due to its premise, the movie might look like a boring recycled one long scene. However, this love letter to stunt actors, like its action pieces, works because the actors give their all without looking like they’re trying too hard. It’s as much a balancing act as any stunt in the movie, and the results are breathtaking.
Better than most current action movies, visually great, with an effortless charm, it’s a great movie for a Sunday evening that deserves more praise than it’s getting. As The Fall Guy tumbles, rolls, blasts, bursts and fights towards its grand finale, the momentum never lets up.
Should You Watch It?
Fun, sarcastic, and a bit camp, The Fall Guy is a good popcorn movie that runs 15 minutes too long. I’d love to see a sequel where Gosling leans even more into the camp.
