The Naked Gun is dumb. Good dumb mostly. But when the jokes don’t land, it’s ridiculously weird and off putting.
In fact, the only one that looks like they are interested in being in this movie, and understand the assignment, is Pamela Anderson. She nails every scene as the satiric version of the “sexy girl” that attracts the main hero.
Don’t get me wrong. I love these movies and I’m along for the ride with these dumb jokes. But for a dumb joke to land, it needs a setup. Half of this movie, at least, has dumb jokes with no setup, relying heavily on what worked previously. While nostalgia can be powerful, the film sometimes feels trapped by its own legacy, afraid to venture too far from the established formula: A dumb police officer with a dumber team that accidentally has a clever idea and solves a crime.
Honestly? The movie feels messy. In half of the scenes, I had such a good time. In the other half, it felt like something of a Gen-X nostalgia trip, peppered with unfunny Millennial pop culture references and lazy, ill-timed jokes.
I have no idea what it’ll have to say to zoomers, many of whom were in grade school when Leslie Nielsen, the original actor, died in 2010.
Should You Watch It?
Wait for streaming on Paramount Plus. The Nake Gun reboot is mostly fun, but crosses the line to wth frequently.
