Lucy and Desi documentary provides one of the most comprehensive looks at the famous couple for the new generation that didn’t witness it. Like myself.
Directed by Amy Poehler, Amazon’s documentary explores the rise of icon Lucille Ball, her relationship with Desi Arnaz, and how their groundbreaking sitcom I Love Lucy forever changed Hollywood, cementing her legacy long after her death in 1989. The movie also briefly explorers the influence of their production company, Desilu, on Hollywood. Let’s just say that Star Trek: The Original Series wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for this couple.
Being equal parts entertaining and informative is hard to achieve. But Lucy and Desi does it while taking an affectionate look at the lives and legacies of its groundbreaking stars. At its heart, it is a love story, just like Desi knew it even when he was dying. “I Love Lucy wasn’t just a title”.
The movie is loaded with both loving and realistic dialogue and footage, some of it is by the power couple themselves. Surprisingly, a great deal of the words and pictures have never been seen or heard before.
To be honest, the film doesn’t break much new ground, or tell any stories that wont be known to die-hard fans of sitcom history and of that particular couple. However, It gives the younger generation a great look at the power couple that is way better than the Aaron Sorkin version, Being the Ricardos.
Should you watch it?
Unwilling to compromise, and still has time to be funny Amy Poehlers documentary will take audiences, old and new, on an emotional rollercoaster. I didn’t know much about Lucille Ball but certainly fell in love with her after this.
Where can I watch it?
