Mafia Mamma is a fun, lightweight comedy with some excellent performances from Bellucci and Collete. And yes, some scenes are too cheesy, but it’s fun.
Starring the duo, I never knew I needed, Monica Bellucci & Toni Collette, Mafia Mamma is a fun and comedic take on Italian mafia and its stereotypes. Imagine Eat Pray Love mixed with The Godfather, with a twist of comedy.
To be honest, I get why critics hated the movie, but it’s obvious that director Catherine Hardwicke didn’t even try to win them. She went for a twisted comedy, and she got it. In fact, this mid-budget movie sustains itself on its funny Collette and Bellucci duet. Collette’s character is hesitant in the beginning, which results in some amazing funny and action scenes. But once she owns it, she steals the screen.
This is a subversive gem and proves that Collette can knock comedy out of the park. Mafia Mamma isn’t going to win any awards, but I still had a lot of fun with it… even when some scenes went a little too far in the realm of the silly. I love that the movie leans into campy comedy and never takes itself too seriously.
The bottom line is a festival of laughs and sublime supporting roles. It’s an offer you cannot refuse!
Should You Watch It?
Even if nothing is even remotely believable, it’s still undemanding fun. I couldn’t stop laughing for most of the movie. Super-duper silly and fun with great performances, and guns.
