My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 repeats much of we loved the first time around but suffers from cliches. Amiable and sunny if often unamusing.
Starring Nia Vardalos, John Corbett and most of the original cast, it’s a fun movie to watch even if it feels forced, with absolutely no logic to it.
In fact, much of the movie is up in the air, way up. The only grounded member of the clan is Aunt Voula (Andrea Martin) who has a great one-liner when you need it the most. She finds laughs even when Nia Vardalos wasn’t counting on them.
The writing is uncomplicated, creating warm and silly situations without much set-up or pay-off, or even any sense. But it’s easy to watch and sometimes even funny. I might be swimming against the tide here: I enjoyed this movie.
Yes, most of it sounds like it was sponsored by the Greek ministry of tourism. But what’s wrong with that? Despite its shortcomings, the movie has some genuine laughs and a healthy dose of heart. It’s not suspenseful and it’s only occasionally funny, but I enjoyed it anyway; it’s about familial and generational issues that connect with most of us, especially as we get older.
Should You Watch It?
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is not as great as the original, but definitely better than the second. With beautiful scenery and a sweet story, it’s still good, light-hearted fun.
Where Can I Watch It?
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is now playing in theaters.
