My Fake Boyfriend tries really hard to hit that sweet spot of romantic comedy. But this low budget movie misses the spot by a couple of inches.
To begin, I’m glad that we’re finally getting queer movies. Especially romantic comedies. And as usual, not all movies are created equal. After watching Fire Island, both loving it and crying while watching it, I had some expectation when I saw that Prime Video are releasing their own queer comedy. However, I’m kind of disappointed.
As a queer person, I really wanted to love this movie. I just couldn’t. Keiynan Lonsdale is great as always (Been a fan since before his role in The Flash series). And I kind of identify with Rafi (played by Samer Salem) but something just isn’t working here. If anything, those two elevated this preposterous romantic comedy from a complete fail to something you can manage to watch on a Sunday afternoon.
Finally, not everyone should be making movies. I get that BuzzFeed is trying to expand, but if this movie is any indication, they shouldn’t. I love it for the cast. They were able to make a queer romantic comedy, and get paid for it. But the movie just doesn’t really work when other platforms are making much better content.
Should you watch it?
For a low budget movie, My Fake Boyfriend does decent thanks to its star Lonsdale. Otherwise, it could have been a complete failure. It’s not Fire Island, but it has its moments.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream My Fake Boyfriend on Amazon Prime Video.
