Rosaline on Disney Plus and Hulu is a fun and fresh take on Romeo and Juliet. Yes, the movie’s audience is not necessarily myself, but I seriously enjoyed it.
The movie is a witty and delightful reimagining of Romeo and Juliet from the perspective of Romeo’s jilted ex-girlfriend, Rosaline (played by Kaitlyn Dever). It features a clever mix of Shakespearean dialogue, Jane Austen-style romance and ’90s rom-com tropes that will appeal to fans of all genres. Dever shines as the feisty and charismatic heroine who schemes to win back Romeo (Sean Teale) from his new love, Juliet (Isabela Merced).
In a world of constant news and problematic issues, I was happy to see a fun but well-made spoof of Shakespeare’s oft-told tragic romance. A light comedy based on a story that everyone knows, with a twist. Thankfully, the story is nicely mounted and unashamedly cheeky. The jape manages to rework one of the greatest romantic tragedies of all time into a teen love story that’s a little more upbeat.
If you watch Rosaline, you won’t hate yourself. However, we’ve just seen it all before, done fresher and better, from Shakespeare in Love to 10 Things.
Should you watch it?
Rosaline offers a fresh perspective on one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters, who is often overlooked or dismissed in other adaptations. In addition, It adds humor, charm, and modern sensibilities to a timeless tale of star-crossed lovers.
