More fun than the first movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 unleashes the might of Robotnic while adding a lot of beloved elements from the game.
The plot is simple: Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). Which results in Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his new friend Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) standing in their way.
And this is where the fun begins. Paramount obviously figured out what worked from the first movie and went all in for this one. The movie stays close to the formula of its predecessor, yet it gives its animated characters more agency, and sass. Once the battle starts, the adventure never stops. All the way to the mid-credit scenes.
One of my favorite things about his installment is the producers realization that Sonic doesn’t have to be a “humanoid” character. Instead, they leaned even more into what made him a great gaming character and we got to see outstanding growth and evolution: transforming him into the video game hero we know him to be. Powers ups and all.
In fact, the movie does two things really well: it marries the live-action and animation into one cohesive motion picture, and it monetizes and prioritizes its star power in Jim Carrey, whose Dr. Robotnik is what goofy childhood villains are made of.
Plus, we get to see a very specific kind of Knuckles, which I loved: He reminded me to Star Trek’s Klingons mixed with Marvel’s Captain America ( the first movie). Not to forget the adorable Tails.
PS: I you find a cute stuffed animal version of Tails in North America, send us a DM.
Should you watch it?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is like a video game come to life. And for once where a movie’s concerned, that’s actually a compliment.
