The Good Liar is meant to be great. And it is! You can never go wrong when you face off Helen Mirren with Ian McKellen.
Let me start by disagreeing with the critics. The Good Liar is better with the sum of its prestigious parts. Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren keep the viewer on their toes especially when you start really understanding the plot. Hint: It’s even more twister and darker than the trailer below.
Don’t get me wrong, the movie has its ups and downs. It’s a calmer, gentler mystery, and maybe that’s the point. You don’t need constant fight scenes to be entertained when you get two of the greatest actors that ever graced our screens to take you (and me in this case) thru highly entertaining mystery with a series of sinuous plot turns.
Watching this movie, you get all the ingredients to get your heart racing and your blood pumping: extortion, murder, stolen identity, even online dating. A con artist gets conned. Yes, we’ve seen it before, but not this way.
If i had to nitpick, it would be Russell Tovey‘s character, Stephen. Tovey basically just disappears thru the movie with a minimal presence. Even though he plays a pivotal role in raising suspicions, he’s easily forgettable. But to be honest? Who can blame him? You’re a supporting actor next to two british acting legends.
Should you watch it?
With actors like Mirren and McKellen in top form, there’s never a dull moment. Add to it darker twists and turns than anticipated, you get a great thriller with top acting.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream The Good Liar on Crave in Canada.
