Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special shines a Christmas light on Mantis and Drax who steal the show. A show full of hearts, and easter eggs.
Full of heart, meta jokes, easter eggs, and more, this Holiday Special might not be your typical Marvel Studios production, and that’s a good thing.
Branded as a Special Presentation, the movie special focuses on Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) trying to give Quill (Chris Pratt) a happy Christmas by gifting him a human, his hero, Kevin Bacon. After the events of Endgame, he misses Gamorra and can’t seem to enjoy Christmas.
Long story short, this is an adventure about a giant misunderstanding that only drives home all the ways in which our found families really understand us. It’s a salute to the warmth of true friendship. Even the kind that begins with kidnapping and mind control.
Director, and writer, James Gunn obviously knows what he’s doing. This special is stuffed with funny, feel-good Christmas joy, amazing music that made me laugh on its own, and a ton of meta jokes towards the bigger MCU, as he gets ready to lead its main competitor, DC.
Should you watch it?
Not considered as an essential viewing for the MCU fans, I enjoyed this special as a standalone and not part of the bigger picture. But those ester eggs were a welcome bonus.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream Marvel Studios’ The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special exclusively on Disney Plus.
