Uncharted [2022] – Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg

Uncharted is a fun throwback to classic adventure movies of the past. Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider circa 2022.

Let’s get something straight. I don’t know anything about the games. However, after a slow start, I really enjoyed this movie and it’s honestly mainly due to Tom Holland.

As a movie based on a video game, I didn’t have many expectations. However, it turned out to be a somewhat entertaining adventure romp that is not quite light enough in tone. Holland and Wahlberg have good screen chemistry together and they make for a winning pair of adventurers.

Yes, director Ruben Fleischer leans heavily on the tried-and-true tropes of this genre: From the misdirection to historical artifacts to unrealistic helicopter rides. But none of that really bothered me to be honest. It just works. After all, Uncharted is not meant to be submitted for awards. It’s just there to entertain us, the viewers, on an evening where we want to turn off our brains and enjoy a light action movie with lots of heart and comedy provided by Holland. He always delivers!

Should you watch it?

There certainly was action AND adventure. If you like the games, you’ll probably love it. And if not, Uncharted is still a fun action movie.
