Wonka breaks the mold of boring prequels by mixing genres and adding a musical flair. The Greatest Showman meets Mary Poppins. Warner is winning where Disney is losing.
Starring Timothée Chalamet as the titular character, Wonka is a funny, heartwarming musical that dreams up a new origin story for a classic character. Director Paul King puts his sweet spin on the classic character with some solid new songs while still leaving some room for the source material’s darker undertones.
In fact, I was captivated by Wonka’s fun, whimsical and his joyful spirit. Chalamet delivers a strong performance, songs included, as does the rest of this great ensemble.
Even when you get “Paddington” flashback to it, the movie is surprisingly entertaining thanks to over the top campiness and a chocolate mafia. I never imagine myself saying that. Yes, some people would say that the movie is “overproduced”. However, what it lacks in edge and gravitas it makes up for in radiant art design and good natured movie magic.
Now I’ll never be able to get the Oompa-Loompa song out of my head!
Should You Watch It?
This heartwarming movie will leave you with the desire to cherish the little moments in life. Wonka is most definitely a new classic by WarnerBrothers.
Where Can I Watch It?
