American Born Chinese is both confusing and interesting. A lot of practical effects mixed with that I’m going to assume a lot of mythology.
Yes, i am not the right person to review the show, but I will do it anyway. Having Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh front and center is a good selling point, especially after the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once. However, even a fairy godmother Yeoh can’t really hide the issues in this show.
From a convoluted and over complicated story to Quan’s scenes that don’t make any sense and felt like they’re stuffed there to modernize the story, American Born Chinese needs a step back.
Being Destin Daniel Cretton‘s first Disney+ show after the success of Marvel’s Shang-Chi, the show had a lot going for it. And personally, even though it has nothing to do with my culture, I was excited for it. However, halfway through watching the series, I was wondering: What exactly is going on?
In fact, it’s never a good sign when a viewer does that. But story aside, some of the visual effects were great, even perfect. Others were lacking.
Should you watch it?
Overall, If I’m being honest, the show might not be the best out there, but it certainly deserves a chance to shine. Lots of potential that needs some fine tuning.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream American Born Chinese exclusively on Disney+ everywhere.
