Catching Lightning might not be the best documentary, but the robbery is interesting enough for you to watch this limited series.
The story of the rise and fall of mixed martial arts fighter Lee Murray ends with the biggest cash heist in british history.
In fact, I am a bit disappointed. Sold as a riveting documentary about how a UFC fighter pulled off the biggest bank heist in history while not being smart enough to cover his tracks, the limited series ends up somewhere else.
Mixing reenactment with archival footage and witness interviews, the show lacks pacing and storytelling. There aren’t really any highs and lows. Right from the first episode, you clearly know what happened during the heist, who did what. As a viewer, it was already obvious how smart they were during the heist, and how dumb they were preparing for it and covering their tracks.
After various machinations that were too boring and repetitive, Catching Lightning ends as an international thriller. The documentary culminates with an ironic twist of fate.
Should you watch it?
As much as I really enjoy true crime documentaries, this one didn’t do it for me. Did i enjoy the story? Definitely. Did I enjoy the show and their storytelling? Not really.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream the documentary Catching Lightning exclusively on Paramount+.
