Halston – Limited Series [2021]

Halston

Ewan McGregor is almost unrecognizable playing Halston, a legendary designer from 1970s and 1980s New York. Sadly, all the megawatt charisma didn’t make the limited series any less boring.

The limited series follows the legendary fashion designer Halston, (played by Ewan McGregor), as he transforms himself into a worldwide fashion empire that defined his era. However, a sudden hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset… the name itself.

The series’ vibrant recreation of a fashion era is overshadowed by a glib treatment of the designer’s personal life. As a result, I was left with a lot of style with little substance.

From falling for Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez) to his friendship with Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), the series doesn’t shy from highlighting life events. However, it fails at actual treatment and interpretations. The whole show felts a bit flat. The battle of Versailles is known to be the most important event in Halston’s life, which why we have a full episode covering it. Unfortunately, the highlight of the second episode is Rodriguez’s portrayal of Minelli and not Halston and the fact that his show was a triumph and resulted in the biggest investment ever as well as selling his name.

Halston – Netflix – Official Trailer
Should you watch it?

Halston is a good watch for anyone looking for 1970s glamour and fashion that is overshadowed by personal life events. Unfortunately, the producers, led by Ryan Murphy, failed at making a meaningful show. However, Krysta Rodriguez‘s portrayal of Liza Minnelli deserves its own show.

Where can I watch it?

You can stream of Halston exclusively on Netflix.
