How I Met Your Father – Season One [2022]

How I Met Your Father

How I Met Your Father tries hard to recapture the charm of the original series. Hard enough that the first season looks more like a bad satire than a sequel.

Let me start by saying that no matter where future seasons go, the show has firmly earned the benefit of the doubt. Yes, it’s not perfect and it’s really trying to bring that early 2000s vibe, and not in a good way. But the show boasts a talented cast capable of salvaging the outdated jokes and tropes with a little bit of help from the writing staff.

Starring Hilary Duff, the show is “obviously” about Sophie telling her son how he met his father. In this first season, we get hints on who that might be, but it’s too obvious where the show is going. Jesse, played by Christopher Lowell is VERY clearly the TED of this sequel. While Valentina, played by Francia Raisa is Barney, Charlie, played by Tom Ainsley is the “british token character”.

However, the high point of this show, as well as most shows, would be a boozy Kim Cattrall, our narrator, trying to work the future version of zoom. Unfortunately, it is mostly downhill from there. Not even the sunny charm and well-honed comedic talents of Hilary Duff can save this How I Met Your Mother spinoff from being the stinker that it is. Hopefully, season 2, which was just announced by Hulu, can shake off some of that.

Finally, while not exactly memorable yet, the glimmer of potential makes me hopeful that they can salvage a potentially great sitcom in a refreshed second season hitting our screens sometimes soon.

Should you watch it?

Too much of an imitation at some points and too scattered and strange at others. But there are a few sparks of potential here. If you loved the original show, this sequel is a decent….imitation.

Where can I watch it?
