Lessons in Chemistry on AppleTV+ gives the patriarchy the middle finger, all the while giving us one of the best tv shows this year. Brie Larson gives one of her best performances while being herself.
Starring Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman & Aja Naomi King, this show has everything. From the intimate look at what it meant to be a woman in the fifties and sixties in the United States, all the way to a different interpretation of what It means to be loved, and love. It honestly reminded me of the conversation Wanda & Vision had in WandaVision. At its heart, Lessons in Chemistry is an aspirational fairytale, the story of a woman who never doubts herself, her work, or her talent, despite the rest of the world doing just that.
The show touches on several hot button issues while benefitting immensely from a perfect pinch of Larson. It’s like this series was made for her (She’s an executive producer). In addition, the show has some of the best sets: Detailed, period-appropriate production design that is a feast to the eyes.
Even when we jump time periods, the show handles it with enough care that it kept me looking forward to the next episode. Yes, the first two episodes feel a bit rough, but stick around. It gets better, if not perfect. It gets to probably be my favorite show this year.
Should You Watch It?
This shows gives its viewers one of the most important life lessons without shoving it down our throats: Our complicated, muddled lives are burdensome, and we must endure and subvert if we are to evolve and find our foothold.
