Masters of the Air – Limited Series [2024] on Apple TV Plus

Masters of the air is a tribute to the pilots who risked and lost their lives fighting a dangerous air war during WW II. It was tough to make out what was going on, and it’s the same with the show. The fog of war is deep indeed.

Starring Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Austin Butler and others, Masters of the Air had a lot of bagage to deal with, and to the creators’ and producers’ credits, they managed to get multiple things out in a terrific way.

With each episode focusing on a battle and a loss, the show allowed us, the viewers, to sympathize with our cast. However, those first few episodes barely hit any chords somehow. Yes, I don’t get it either. I started watching the show expecting a long form of “Saving Private Ryan” and ended up having a bad and slow version of “MidWay” move, minus any flair.

The good news is that Masters of the Air gradually loses its aw-shucks Andy Hardy attitude and gets into the horrifying meat and potatoes of aerial combat. Once off the ground, the show becomes a gripping survival drama… terrifying, even. The last three episodes? Horrifying. Get your tissue box.

Should You Watch It?

It’s quite simply as good as this sort of stuff gets, especially for streaming. While it could have used a bit more style, Masters of the Air is a beautiful yet gut-wrenching look into the lives of these brave men. The production quality is spectacular from top to bottom, but the show could have benefited from one less episode.
