Ms Marvel aims high. Too high. Even if the Marvel Studio’s coming of age series hits most of its notes, it’s just trying to do too much.
As a start, I didn’t know much about Ms Marvel, or Iman Vellani. But as a Marvel fan, and one who watched everything Marvel Studios produced in the last 12 years, I had an idea of what’s coming up. However, I wasn’t ready for what I saw.
Each Marvel Studios series on Disney Plus has an intention and a different genre. WandaVision was Sitcoms, Loki was science fiction, Falcon and the winter soldier was about action and spies, Hawkeye was comedy. So how about Ms Marvel? Simply put it, it’s a coming-of-age story about an American Pakistani teenage going thru puberty by gaining powers.
After watching the whole show, I have some thoughts. Villani is the perfect Kamalan Khan. Absolutely no doubt there. And as a middle eastern, I love the cultural direction Marvel is going for, even when it’s to make money. This show highlights almost perfectly the struggle of a brown Muslim person in North America in general, and in USA especially. In addition, each episode had a very culturally specific scene that made me LOL hard. Plus, the whole teenage comic book vibe across the whole show. 10/10.
On the other hand, the show suffers from the burden of the MCU and Disney+. The creators tried to do too many things in the six episodes formats that a lot of things made no sense. Yes, we changed Kamala’s origin story compared to the comics, I have no problems with that. Even her updated powers. But the whole thing related to the “Noor Dimension” and how it was treated, especially in the fifth episode, was honestly pointless. I expected something completely different after the 4 hours long buildup.
In addition, helping Kamala get comfortable with herself and powers was done in 5 minutes? Really? Isn’t that the whole point of a “coming-of-age” story?
And those magic keywords at the end of the last episode! 🤌🏻👌🏻.
Should you watch it?
As a brown person, as a Muslim person, definitely! As a Marvel fan? sure. Kamala Khan deserved an origin story that focused more on her, without all the fillers, bells, and whistles that served no one except stuffing the story with un-necessary weight.
Where can I watch it?
