Marvel Studios is back with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A Disney Plus series that felt more of a long movie than an actual series.
When Disney announced the show, it was obvious that it’s about Sam (Anthony Mackie) accepting the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Everyone important from the Captain America trilogy is back! Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), an updated and truer to the comics version of Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) is also back, as well as Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). But we’ll talk about her in a bit.
Happening around six months after Endgame (almost 5 months after WandaVision), the show explored how Sam and Bucky are trying to fit in a post blip world while the US government nominates a new Captain America, and a rogue group is trying to topple them.
First, I must admit that having marketing Zemo as the bad guy of the show was a genius move by Marvel. However, after watching the show, it felt like a calculated move to mis-direct the audience. While Brühl‘s Zemo made the first half of the show entertaining (Hello Dancing Zemo!), he doesn’t really get to do much on the long term, yet.
On the other hand, even after the post-credit scenes of the last episode, Sharon Carter’s placement in this show still feels a bit weird and out of place. She’s obviously there to trigger another season of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. Maybe Marvel Studios has other plans for Agent 13? We’ll have to wait and see 🤷🏻♂️.
In general, it’s another great Marvel Studios production that clearly served a purpose. Pushing the character development of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barns (no spoilers, watch the show) as well as introducing a LOT of side characters that have a big potential in the MCU if Marvel sticks to the comic arc of each of them.
Should you watch it?
If you can get over how slow the first three episodes are, the second half of the show will give you one of the best satisfying rewards ever. Without any spoilers, you definitely need to see the last episode if you’re a Marvel fan.
Where can I watch it?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is available exclusively on Disney+.
