More of a setup for the final season than a season itself, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is still good in its fourth outing, yet not standing on its own.
Even with its flaws, it’s good to have the show back. Mrs. Maisel is one of my favorite Prime Video originals ever. However, the show has seemingly run out of fresh material, and they know it. Just before the premiere of this fourth season, they announced that it’s getting renewed for a fifth and final season. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is bowing out almost at its peak just when it continues to reward fans with expert delivery and snappy presentation.
With season 4, the visual opulence remains stunning and Midge wears clothes to die for. That’s still part of the draw. But there is now a feeling that the series is treading water. The lack of any self-reflection, low stakes, and the fact that Midge is supposed to be so perfect is starting to just make things meh. It was once marvelous, now it’s a routine in desperate search of new punchlines, and a sense of direction. Hopefully, Lenny’s (Luke Kirby) dialogue in the finale translates into a kickass final season.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to keep watching Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein playing Midge and Susie. I fell in love with them since the second episode of the first season. However, this fourth installment felt more like a Susie storyline then Midge. Plus, most of the events of the 8 episodes run could have been done in a 1.5h movie. And it would have been better.
Should you watch it?
Season four of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is all about Midge figuring out who she is outside of the life she once had, and it looks like this is going to make for a really interesting next step. Sadly, we never get to see it in this season.
Where can I watch it?
You can stream all seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
