The New Look starts and ends on a fashion high note. The difference? You’ll fall in love with Dior and his story.
Starring Ben Mendelsohn (Dior), Juliette Binoche (Coco Channel), Maisie Williams (Catherine Dior), and John Malkovich (Lucien Lelong), the show takes you on a wild and human journey during Nazi occupation of France and how each fashion designer charted their own course to survive.
Lelong chose to sell to their wives, Christian Dior kept his head down and worked for Lelong, Channel closed shop, but had a complicated relation #NoSpoilers.
However, the show comes with 2 huge surprises for most viewers, me included. The personal relation between french designers, and the story of Catherine Dior.
Captured and tortured by the Nazis for being part of the french resistance, Maisie Williams does a stellar performance communicating the horrors to the viewers. Her multi-dimensional interpretation makes it easier for the younger generation to discover the inspirations and motivations of her brother, and how his style is affected by his own journey, and his connection to his mother and sister.
On the other hand, the connection between all the famous french designers was surprising. Balmain and Dior were friends. They looked up to Balenciaga, and mentored some of the newer generation, notably Pierre Cardin.
Should You Watch It?
The show is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; Just look at the different paths each of the main characters, Dior and Channel took. Not an easy watch, but a great one.
