FX’s Dying for Sex is an honest, heartfelt, and at times uncomfortable journey that will resonate with anyone who has ever sought to live life on their own terms.
Starring Michelle Williams and based on based on the real-life Molly Kochan and the podcast of the same name, the show made me laugh, cry, laugh again, and wanting to enjoy life even more. All the feelings in just 8 episodes.
At first, the show may seem like an uncomfortable and sad story, and also something we’ve seen before, but it’s that and more. The show refuses to settle for the neutered, morose mood most expect from a cancer story. It’s quite something to behold. Sex and death have never been such bittersweet bedmates.
In fact, creators Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock managed to do the impossible. Make a story about death tender, witty, and also very funny… Who doesn’t want to try all the vibrators before they die when they know their expiration date?
In summary, Dying for Sex is probably TV’s most moving meditation on friendship, love, pleasure, pain, death and life that ALSO includes orgasm torture and puppy play. I know a couple of friends who would enjoy all of that. Especially the last two!
Should you watch it?
Dying for Sex is a bold, unapologetic story about what it means to take control when you have nothing left to lose. It’s not just about dying – it’s about finally learning how to live.
