Beetlejuice Beetlejuice [2024] – Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Crave Canada December 2024

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has no reason to exist at all other than for the nostalgia and campiness of it all. A goofy delight that doesn’t try anything new.

Bringing back most of the cast from the original movie, and some new ones, Tim Burton uses this supposed sequel to recovers his stylistic seal and expand the macabre imagery of his eccentric character. However, this horror comedy is often trapped in an empty repetition. This movie seems to be stuck between two worlds, often working as a tuned-in sequel to the first flick but other times failing to capitalize on established material.

In fact, the movie has some clear behind the scenes troubles that reflected the final product. I was going to say that this feels like a first draft script, but it doesn’t even feel like that. This feels like two or three first draft scripts stitched together. The movie These clearly conflicting and over stuffed storylines. Once second, we’re following Lydia, now it’s Dylia. But before we understand what’s going on with her, it’s time for Astrid, and Wolf Jackson. We don’t get more than 10 seconds with each scene to try to digest what we saw. These edits stole the movie’s soul and burried any trace of surprises. All the way to the pre-credits scenes.

Not to say that it’s a bad movie. It’s not perfect, but it kinda works thanks to the onscreen familial chemistry between Ryder, O’Hara, and Ortega.

However, when the credits roll, you may feel you’ve spent 104 minutes in a world of Burton-esque antics, but without much of a payoff.

Should You Watch It?

This sequel never quite recaptures the original’s dark magic, or anything related to it. But if you enjoy Burton’s style and camp, this one is for you.
