Dicks: The Musical [2023] - Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson, Megan Mullally on Paramount Plus

Dicks: The Musical is a ridiculous and camp musical that has no reason for existing. Sometimes cringe, other times funny.

Starring Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson, Megan Thee Stalion, and Nathan Lane, the movie has no reason for existing besides: Why not? Even the creators Sharp and Lane make fun of how they were allowed to do this in the gagreel at the end.

Yes, it has issues. And a lot of them. However, It’s a fragile but workable framework for what is basically a series of sketches: Megan Mullally and Lane serve as parental figures on more than one level, stepping in whenever the one-note performances of the leads begin to pall.

Its premise is interesting enough, but the musical is trying too hard to be funny, engineering its entire persona around seeing how far it can go. The movie clocks in at only 86 minutes, thankfullully. However, without any genuinely catchy songs besides “Out Alpha the Alpha,” there’s little to make Dicks memorable.

Long story short, it’s a raunchy musical that’s trying so very hard to be funny, and sometimes nails it #PunIntended. The best way I can describe this musical as “a fun and raucous Parent Trap.” And that’s a good thing.

Should You Watch It?

Dicks: The Musical looks and feels like an off-off-off-off broadway that exists just because someone had money to spend. It’s definitely camp, and over the top. Some might like it, others will definitely hate it.
