Paddington in Peru brings back the most famous fictional bear outside of Winnie who’s now 66 years old. You wouldn’t know that from his own film franchise which remains fresh, funny, and charming three films in.
Paddington in Peru isn’t quite as wondrous as the first two installments, but it’s wonderful enough for these times. Starring Ben Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville and others, this third installment of the franchise is a family-friendly jungle adventure that places Paddington and the Browns in the middle of an unexpected quest. While it kept the same charm and wonder of the first two, this film, unfortunately. lacks momentum for most of its runtime, with the screenplay offering few exciting moments.
In fact, this movie had a lot of great stuff. Olivia Colman is a great addition. She’s infallibly cheery even when what she is saying contradicts her positivity, making the Reverend Mother one of the film’s highlights. Antonio Banderas is another one. Even with his limited screentime and almost generic role, he made an impression that might give him a returning role.
While it isn’t the cinematic masterpiece the first two original films were, this film is still an undeniable delight and proof that we should have at least ten of these films to follow our beloved bear through each of his endeavors. I am almost forty and I’d watch every single one of them. I smiled for almost the whole runtime of the three movies.
