Film: The Dog Stars [2026] – Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin

The Dog Stars brings nothing new to the table. It’s so bare bones. It’s the kind where characters keep telling each other what kind of world it is.

Starring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, and others, this film is definitely not awful. If anything, it’s beautifully made. It’s just boring and uninspired.

For a film set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, it is cluttered with plot points and symbolic gimmicks that barely scratch the surface and explain anything significant; the pileup distracts from the fact that it isn’t really about anything at all. Even the “dog” part of the film doesn’t last long enough. Jasper was amazing.

Is it about how a bunch of different characters survived the end of the world? No. Is it about a certain character surviving? also nope. Is it about the search for something? Kinda, but the film also doesn’t explain it.

The only shining point of the film, other than the beautiful scenery of Elordi’s character flying to nowhere, is Allison Janney‘s Darlene. You get a creepy feeling from the second she shows up, till even after her arc is wrapped up. While her scenes should earn her some awards, it’s never explained how and why she’s doing whatever she’s doing. No spoilers here!

All in all, The Dog Stars is an okay film that wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) be on anyone’s top list of any kind, except boring films.

Should You Watch It?

Well produced, aimless with too many flying shot fillers. Feels like a vanity project from director Ridley Scott where the only shining spot is the very limited performance by Allison Janney. She deserves an award for it.
