Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is a radical vision that sets fire to the antiquated text and, from the ashes, releases a cinematic beast… The result is staggering.

With a staggering A-List cast, I was skeptical, but I was proven wrong. Led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film delivers on the scale it promises. From the war of Troy to the epic mystical wars, Nolan uses his canvas to deliver an impressive yet flawed cinematic spectacle with The Odyssey, elevated by strong performances from Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway.

Sadly, Nolan exists in our current time and society where everyone is up at arms about everything. Want to debate the cast? It’s not historically accurate? LOL. It’s a story about something that never really happened. Calm down people.

Artistically speaking, the film is almost a masterpiece; The true meaning of cinematic experience; Nolan brings the ancestral story as a reflection of humanity, trauma, loyalty, and the end of civilization if we don’t learn and understand the mistakes of the past. Looking back at it, perhaps only The Odyssey could offer Nolan the canvas epic enough for all his obsessions with no CGI, and full-on animatronics. Yes, that scene with the witch is not CGI.

Whatever one thinks of Nolan’s take on The Odyssey, he has managed to steer it between the Scylla of fight fests like 300 and the Charybdis of a less rousing, more academic rendering. It’s a layered, visually stunning epic of honor with a grounded message about abuses of trust and power. Sounds familiar?
