The Sheep Detectives was definitely unexpected. The film uses its bizarre premise—a flock of book-loving sheep trying to solve an absurd crime—to explore the theme of grief.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Brett Goldstein, and others, this movie has strong characters, aided by a good voice cast for the sheep characters, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston and Chris O’Dowd.
While pitched as a film for children, it will warm everyone’s heart. Like “Babe” and “Homeward Bound” before it, the film treats its audience with the respect and maturity they deserve. Regardless of your age, this film respects you, thanks to its writing, and surprisingly A-List cast and performances.
Honestly, it was both fascinating and surprising to watch. And sometimes surprising. Going in, I had low expectations. A movie about sheep investigating a murder. Sounds ridiculous. No? Well, perhaps that’s the biggest surprise of all: that a film about sheep detectives ends up saying so much about people.
Simply put it, watching this film was a delight. That I can’t wait to repeat on streaming later.
Should You Watch It?
Fun, unexpected, and full of heart. Sheep are always adorable, but they’re even more adorable here.
