What Neagley lacks in pure brawn, it makes up for with intimate character work and Maria Sten’s note-perfect performance. It doesn’t quite soar, but this spin-off has legs.
Frances Neagley is back as a private investigator based in Chicago. Last seen as a supporting character in Reacher, she gets dragged to investigate the death of childhood friend. She also happens to discover some truths about her childhood.
Thing is that I never thought that Neagley has enough character to get her own show. I loved her in Reacher, but a spinoff? I had my doubts. To be honest, I think the writers tried to cram too many plots into the first two episodes, in their effort towards world building. A murder, an investigation, new supporting characters, and haphephobia (hatred/fear of being touched). That’s too much heavy lifting for 2 hours of what’s supposed to be a light action show.
Watching the first couple of episodes was rough. The story went nowhere besides one mystery after another without any connective tissue. I had to pause and come back days later. And I’m happy I did. The show gets soooo much better in its second half.
If Prime Video plays its cards right, both shows can keep having their own corners of the universe and build towards crossover events that bring Alan Ritchson and Maria Sten back together for years to come.
Should You Watch It?
Neagely suffers from wanting to be a clone of Reacher, instead of extending the universe. The first two episodes are rough, but once you cross the halfway point, it’s as good as the original show.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Neagley exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
