Your Friends & Neighbors might be one of Jon Hamm‘s best shows so far, but it still feels engineered by AI.
It’s frustrating. Your Friends & Neighbors was never going to be groundbreaking, but it might have been a good time. The premise is interesting: What happens to a guy when he loses everything? It’s a comedy show that is mostly a snooze fest.
Don’t get me wrong. The show is well-produced, well-written and loaded with excellent actors. I shouldn’t have anything to complain about, but I do. Why, I ask myself, should I care about any of these people? I don’t. If anything, it’s too well produced to allow any life to the script and characters.
There’s a fair amount of monologuing in the first episode that tries to wedge in some funny lines, that gets repeated in the final episode. However, at least the lines in the premiere manage to hit instead of miss like the finales.
The show is not groundbreaking, it could have been a Ted Lasso, if it was allowed to breathe. Not sure if Apple is going to allow a second season, but if they do, they need to take a deep breath, and let the creatives work.
Should You Watch It?
Jon Hamm can sell anything, but even he has trouble making this lazy, warmed-over salaciousness appealing.
