Sinners [2025] - Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Saul Williams

Sinners is a racism study hidden behind a music history and vampire thriller movie. A bit too long, but still good.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners was a surprise hit earlier this year. I held off watching it because I’m not a fan of horror movies. But I was wrong.

Starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, and others, Sinners is fresh, exciting, yet repetitive. After Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, it’s clear that Coogler continues to grow as a filmmaker. The choice not to water down the more challenging ideas underneath the blockbuster sensibilities of this movie proves to be the lifeblood of the film: Racism, cultural appropriation of music, and slavery. It’s all there. You just have to look 1 centimeter under the surface. Or half an inch for my american readers.

However, like many of the things invoked here, the ideas are more portentous than their follow-throughs. The movie stuffs too many ideas, and doesn’t have enough time to really focus on any of them. Did I enjoy the history less? Yes. Did I enjoy the music? Definitely. Did I enjoy the vampires? Certainly. However, we barely get a taste of all of these three pillars.

The music is not the focus, the racism is barely there, and the vampires are used as a vessel for racism. I have no problem in that. However, If you’re going to promote it as a movie about vampires, show them for more than half an act.

There’s a strong potential for a sequel, especially with how this one ended. I certainly enjoyed Sinners even if it ran a bit too long for my taste. But I’m not interested in a sequel to be honest.
