Stick on Apple TV Plus is good. But let’s be honest. Ted Lasso worked, so Apple is now cloning it across sports.
Starring Owen Wilson & Peter Dager, Stick takes some big swings, and enough of them connect to make something decent. The show just misses too many tap-ins to be truly great.
This is a show about a teenager discovering himself, and a has-been gold star rediscovering himself. There are multiple ways to react to big events in your life, and the show approaches them with a heart and humor that will no doubt resonate with an audience differently. And that difference is good.
However, how much tension can be packed into the build-up to a golf putt across the carpet of a bar-room, with a whisky glass on its side as the target? Not very much, it turns out. The whole show’s pace is just…there. While Lasso had peaks and valleys, ups and down that made us cheer for the team like it was a real one, Stick misses all of that. I really didn’t care much when Santi was being manipulated by his dad, and I cared even less when Pryce missed the shot on purpose, as part of a scam.
All in all, It’s a good, fine, fun series to watch. Sadly, it doesn’t leave a big impression, good or bad, once you finish it.
Should You Watch It?
Feel good Ted Lasso clone that replaces Football with Golf. Is it good? yes. Does it rise to its inspiration? Not really. Peter Dager & Marc Maron are the standouts.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Stick exclusively on AppleTV+.
