With season two, FX’s English teacher is still an under-seen, very clever and very funny series. Brian Jordan Alvarez knows what he’ doing.
While the first season introduced us to this high school universe, this season takes it a step further, but i don’t think it was in the right direction.
As the episodes went on, the series continues to thrive in a comfortable groove. Too comfortable to be honest. Evan is becoming too self-righteous, but humor remains unrelenting and not afraid of taking jabs at the most pressing issues facing education so far. Which is great.
There continues to be a subversive thrust to English Teacher… What the show’s creator needs is more confidence in what the show can do, given the rich vein of comedy material it has at hand. As a result, the show is stuck at a lower tier while it has the same potential as Abbot Elementary, if not more.
Yes, this season is not as perfect as the first, even if it feels more polished. To stay with the sports metaphors for a bit, this show’s batting average is high, connecting far more often than not. And at this point, the comedy has the chemistry, playbook, and legs for more potential seasons. I just hope they rebalance the characters a bit moving forward.
Should You Watch It?
English Teacher is still a funny workplace comedy, despite the fact that the Alvarez’ character is becoming more self-righteous as the series goes along.
