F1 The Movie feels like a cousin to Top Gun: Maverick. Full of action, slightly longer than it should be, yet still entertaining.
Starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris & Javier Bardem, the movie is clearly meant to re-ignite the interest in the sport, and it did. However, in this review, we’re going to judge it as a movie, and not as a marketing stunt.
To be honest, Brad Pitt carries this movie on his own, most of the time. He never takes his foot off the gas, pun intended. However, the main issue here is the script. For all the money spent on this tentpole position it is remarkable they couldn’t afford a screenplay that wasn’t one of the thinnest in recent memory. Cars go vroom vroom around the track carrying characters who never go through their own arc of any kind. Watching Pitt play a Millennial duke of hazard causes dissatisfaction, especially when Sonny’s flaws are as superficial as Cruise’s in Maverick. For all the film’s commotion, its vicarious “excitement” is unmoving.
As much as I’m not a fan of Tom Cruise, I was never bored in Maverick. I was bored here. Don’t get me wrong. The practical stunts and racing sequences are worth watching alone. The plot veers off a lot of times, but thankfully, the film makes it worth sticking with to the finish line. Yes, the credits scene is useless, but nothing is perfect.
Did the racing scenes get me excited? Yes. Did anything else in this movie do the same? No.
Should You Watch It?
The film ultimately sticks the landing, but it’s a bit of a bumpy road getting there. It’s twenty minutes or so too long.
Where Can I Watch It?
