Freakier Friday is actually good. And yes, I am as surprised as you are. It’s hard not to have a good time watching it.
Starring Jamie Lee Curtis & Lindsay Lohan, the sequel is set almost 20 years after the original. And instead of a 2-way swap, we’re getting double that. While watching Curtis and Lohan milk the silly premise for all its worth once again, it’s hard not to enjoy almost every single second.
And yes, Disney hasn’t been known recently for making good sequels, or originals to be honest. But this one breaks the curse. It’s the rare sequel that embraces three generations, updating the formula with wit, heart, and rhythm.
While Lohan is basically playing herself, this setup provides a showcase for Curtis’ unique charm when she’s portraying a teenager trapped in the body of an older woman. The iconic actress gives voice to the horrors of aging … and she’s having the time of her life doing it.
Yes, Freakier Friday isn’t a flawless sequel, but it does supply a satisfying nostalgia rush. It’s a purely a fun ride and sometimes that’s enough.
Should You Watch It?
The film is sweet and kind, choosing a great deal of empathy that breaks through even the more repetitive generational-anchored jokes, leaving behind a warmth that we can all use right now.
Where Can I Watch It?
