Honey Don’t is supposed to be a Noir movie about a private detective. What I saw was a spaghetti mess that should have been a series.
Starring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans, the film has a lot going for it, on paper at least. I’m not really sure what director Ethan Coen was trying to do here.
Honey Don’t felt like a giant apathetic shrug of a movie that doesn’t even seem interested in recapturing that idiosyncratic Coen energy, let alone actually delivering something that will capture an ounce of the viewer’s interest.
The story explores some intriguing elements, but its connective tissue is non-existent. Essentially, the end product is a rambling mystery that keeps having to remind you what the mystery actually is. The whole things plays like zany black comedy, all crazy faces and Looney Tunes violence. What story there is, though, springs from childhood domestic abuse. The result is exactly as jarring at it sounds.
All in all, while the joyously unabashed queerness and delicious production details along with Qualley and Evans all-in performances are undeniably cool and effective, all I can say is honey just wait, and maybe stream this one. You don’t need to. You’re not missing much.
Should You Watch It?
Honey, don’t! The story is so disjointed and slow, it could have been better as a series. At the end, there’s no point to Evans’ character, and the story arc of Plaza’s MG Falcone makes absolutely no sense.
