M3GAN is a brilliantly fun juggling act of eerie themes, campy humor and sincere drama, there is something for everyone here.
Watching the film almost 3 years after its release, I’m glad I did. Starring Amie Donald, Violet McGraw, and Allison Williams, this is a film that mixes a lot of genres. Promoted as a thriller and horror. Sharper and more satisfying than we have any right to expect a movie like this to be.
Films like this remind me of 1970s and 1980s ridiculous low budget thrillers that are more funny than scary. They provide the right amount of clap-inducing ridiculousness you would want from a film about a killer toy that, ultimately, looks like Chucky’s nepo-baby.
M3GAN is chaotic, dumb — and nearly perfect. Even though it’s been out for a while, I wasn’t sure what’s going to happen next. And that’s a great thing! It’s an off-the-wall, irreverent, and absolutely on-target sci-fi slasher-satire. It accomplishes nearly everything it attempts and promises.
Yes, the writing is a bit surface level, but it’s so easy to overlook all of that when you’re having a time that’s as fun as this movie is. I’m definitely watching it again. Let me just watch the sequel first. Sometimes cinema is just laughing along with a murder robot.
