My Old Ass [2024] - Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella on Prime Video

My Old Ass is a lighthearted coming of age with a twist. Love watching every second of it. Maisy Stella shines as the younger Aubrey Plaza.

Writer and director Megan Park nails this film with a strong and resonant flick about reconciling with your younger self. Plaza was a perfect choice. She’s been having a great year. Even as a supporting character to Stella’s Elliott, she shined as the dark sarcastic middle-aged woman. It takes all of Plaza’s weird chanting inflections and Stella’s exuberantly twitchy enthusiasm to make it pay off — but it does, with sly charm.

My Old Ass veers from the cheesy and plucky sci-fi comedy into a much more earnest lane; Fortunately, under Park’s direction, it never feels all that forced. Some beautifully scripted dialogue scenes, nicely performed by two amazing stars as well as a shy Percy Hynes White, this movie creates a delightful time-travel paradox pic that can sit along with other teen comedies as a timeless treasure.

Yes, this movie is not re-inventing the wheel. It’s a simple idea… the thing is, that it’s done with real tenderness and insight. A Summary? Things never stay the same, and it’s a vital part of growing up and learning that lesson. Some learn it early, but some learn it later, and My Old Ass does well by making that the core of this different coming-of-age teen romance movie.

Should You Watch It?

The most pleasant surprise of the late summer. My Old Ass is a coming-of-age tale with a stoner comedy soul. It is not the wild, drug-fueled comedy you might expect, but it is the movie you need.
