Film: Swiped [2025] – Lily James, Ben Schnetzer on Hulu / Disney Plus

Swiped captures the ambition and toxicity of startup culture, showing how innovation in dating apps came at a personal cost for Whitney Wolfe Herd.

Starring Lily James & Ben Schnetzer, this 20th Century Studios film tells an important and necessary story about resilience and female empowerment in the tech industry. James carries the film with ease, not only as an actress but also as a producer and powerfully conveys a story of female empowerment in a universe historically dominated by the male gaze.

The events are mostly public thanks to the leak of Herd’s settlement with Tinder, though she wasn’t involved in the movie because of her NDA. Watching it adds a layer of complexity, leaving you to figure out what’s true and what’s not. Putting that aside, the film offers a sobering portrait of a woman in tech, an industry still in need of change, touching on sexism and the strength it takes to push through when you feel at your weakest. She keeps going, a true warrior.

While not a flawless biopic or the most serious take on these stories, this film delivers a lighthearted and engaging look at how Bumble came to life. Much like reality, Swiped gives its main character a happy ending while staying true to the challenges faced along the way. She shines as one of the rare women in a largely male-dominated arena.

Should You Watch It?

Swiped is inspirational, sure. It’s also unsettlingly cautionary. A must-watch if you ask me.
