You Can See Everything clearly shows that you can’t, right from the beginning. An eye opening that gets lost halfway, then sticks most of its landing.
Almost everyone in North America has seen The Dropout. And if not, you’ve seen enough news to know who Elizabeth Holmes is, what she did, and what she’s accused of. Thankfully, this Nathan Fielder documentary doesn’t shy away from any of this.
If anything, Fielder leans into it, and voices our questions straight to Holmes. And honestly, the first half of the documentary felt like a dark comedy. I wasn’t sure if Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans, were being serious, or joking. Like how can you not realize that you’re obviously lying, or hiding the truth.
Jumping to the second act, Evans lost me with his peacocking, controlling the conversations, and clearly being a MAGA fanboy. However, I started rethinking my impression of Holmes. Especially when Fielder sat her down and had a real conversation about her communication skills and the impression the audience gets out of it, vs what she thinks she’s communicating.
However, by the third act, I started getting irritated. Is Holmes really this delusional and/or trusting? You’re alive, and with full brain power. Why would you give full power of attorney to a controlling maniac that only cares about money? When you say you don’t? And you’re doing this, including jail time, because you want to help humanity?
And don’t get me started on Amanda Seyfried showing up. While her re-enactments were useful to the story telling, pretending to care about anything and anyone except herself didn’t.
Overall, I’m happier now that Holmes is spending time in jail. I just wish that Evans would join her, instead of starting a new company to scam another set of investors. But they would have earned being scammed if they can trust someone like Evans. While Holmes might have had good intentions, we can never really now, Evans clearly doesn’t.
Should You Watch It?
I still don’t know if she’s a genius, or delusional, but the documentary confirms that she easily defers to the men around her. And that’s never a good thing.
