Road House is honestly better than it looks, and by far greater than it should be. And it’s all thanks to Gyllenhaal‘s take on Dalton.
In fact, it’s not only thanks to Gyllenhaal. Director Doug Liman clearly knows the assignment and he’s not trying to make it anything bigger than it is. Road House is supposed to be a roadhouse action film.
It’s all thanks to two main actors: Jake Gyllenhaal & Conor McGregor. On one hand, Gyllenhaal brings a rush of adrenaline every time he is on screen. On the other hand, McGregor brings on the craziness. And to be honest, he’s a lot of fun to watch. Especially his introduction and his mid-credits scene. Perfection.
The combination of Gyllenhaal’s easy charm, McGregor’s chaos, some Florida sunshine and some fight scenes for the ages make this Road House worth stopping by. If you like your movies action packed and violent, then this is the movie for you. It’s bigger, self-aware, and occasionally funny. In fact, It’s dumb fun, with equal parts dumb and fun.
Should You Watch It?
Even though the remake has little ambition other than to outdo its predecessor, there is a lot of sense and integrity in its direct approach to the material. Plus, you can’t help but enjoy watching Jake Gyllenhaal play the role of the steely, contrived, reluctant hero
