Resurrection picks up a while after New Blood, cleans up all of its mistakes, and takes us back to the original format. The difference? Dexter is the father now.
Even though Original Sin didn’t work out (I really wanted it to, it’s a perfect prequel), Michael C. Hall clearly has a grasb on who Dexter is. It shows.
With an all star cast of serial killers, Resurrection manages to fix the issues of its predecessor, lean on the original show’s ending, and push the story even further. Who doesn’t like seeing Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, and Krysten Ritter play serial killers? (Ritter was especially good at it).
While the motivation of the season is Dexter protecting his son, he accidentally goes on a journey of self-discovery after his near-death experience. The result? A good show that is made for streaming, where Hall gets to enjoy himself, and talk to us, the viewers, about his urges as Dexter.
Yes, the story is a bit…weak. The narrative is as interwoven and complicated as a DNA strand, and relies on the acceptance of quite a few major coincidences — but it all works. Why? Dexter prowling around New York City is far more compelling than him being miserable in the woods.
Watching Resurrection is, miraculously, like stepping into a time machine back to the early days of Dexter, when it was slyly funny and had a firm grasp on its storytelling.
Should You Watch It?
Michael C. Hall‘s best Dexter performance so far. Back to what worked, but in New York. Hope season two can get even more free from the original show. Good overall, with potential to be great.
Where Can I Watch It?
You can stream Dexter: Resurrection exclusively on Paramount Plus.
